Default Twist off bolts in practice

We would generally specify that we need pre-tensioned bolts and then allow the contractor to decide on the type. They ask us to accept twist off bolts and we approve. It seems to be more common to use twist off bolts in the US.

Default twist-off bolts

I am told by local fabricators that the cost of twist-off bolts is just a few pennies more than standard bolts, which are already modestly priced. One of the biggest local objections is that twist-off bolts require special equipment. However, that is not a large expense.

I think that I may start to specify twist-off bolts on a regular basis.

I have heard some structural reasons against using twist-off bolts. For example, simple connections like shear tabs will not rotate until friction is overcome.
